Welcome to the third and (most likely) final edition of the Blueshirts Breakaway 2020 NHL Draft Prospect Rankings! I say most likely because, well, as I type this the NHL is apparently still determining what in the hell it plans to do with the playoffs, draft, lottery, etc. If they end up deciding to not have the draft until months from now and we have more games from some of the prospects during that time, it’s possible we revisit these one last time prior to the draft.
Below you will see the individual tiered prospect rankings from Drew Way, George Obremski and Rich Coyle, along with an aggregated site list that combines the ranks and tiers of all three of us. Each of us actively maintains our own rankings lists that go far beyond the top-62 you see below, so if you have any questions on how we feel about guys that did not make the cut, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
We think it is important to reiterate the fact that each of us strongly believes that the tier a player is grouped into holds more weight than the individual ranking. A quote from Drew regarding the methodology behind tiers, which was posted in our December ranks as well, is that “in essence, if I have a group of players on the same tier, that means that if I’m a GM drafting, then I deem this group of players as all about equal in terms of their overall ability and potential to become an impact NHL player. I’m a massive advocate of always drafting the best overall player, but, if I have a handful of players left on the same tier I am deciding between, this is where things like positional need come into play.”
Beyond these ranks, we will definitely publish a mock draft in the upcoming few weeks, where each of us plays GM for the day and makes selections based off of what we would do if we where each GM. This is an important distinction that we will again reiterate when we publish the mock draft. We are not insiders, and do not pretend to have actual insight into what teams WILL DO, so instead we have some fun with what we WOULD DO if we were each team. We may have some additional content as well related to the draft, all depending on how our schedules pan out over the upcoming weeks/months. Also, if you missed it, Drew recently kicked off our draft coverage by awarding his 2020 Ty Smith Memorial Trophy, which in essence serves as a piece where Drew discusses players he feels are being under-ranked by the broader prospects community.
Enjoy, and please do not hesitate to reach out to Drew Way, George Obremski and Rich Coyle if you have any questions, comments or feedback. Specifically, we urge you to reach out to Drew if you love the ranks, and reach out to George and Rich with any negative feedback. As Drew is the one typing up this intro, he has decided to officially name George and Rich the co-heads of the Blueshirts Breakaway Draft Analysis Complaint Department.
